Occupational Ice Safety
Occupational ice safety courses are designed for the student that is working in the ice covered static or moving water environment. The focus is on providing the student with the skills to safely work in an at-risk environment. Training objectives will include:
- Hazard awareness and hazard avoidance
- Protective control measures (Belay systems)
- Self rescue
- Second party (teammate) non-contact rescue and assists.
Awareness – Online course
The awareness (online course) will introduce the hazards associated with ice covered static or moving water environment. The online course will also identify ice formation, potential areas of weaknesses, control measures and the required Personal Protective Equipment. It is expected to take 3-4 hours to complete.
Level 1 – Low Risk
Ice safety level 1 is the online course plus one day of practical. This program is designed to provide the student with the skills to safely work in a low-risk ice environment. A low-risk ice environment is static water ice or the warm zone of ice-covered moving water. Level one certification can also be used for students that do not meet the requirements for level two certification.
Level 2 – High Risk
Ice Safety level 2 is the online course plus two days of practical. This program is designed to provide the student with the skills to safely work on ice covered moving water. On completion the student will be able to:
- Identify and avoid hazards
- Determine ice strength and identify areas of weakness
- Set up and operate control measures (Belay systems)
- Perform self rescue from moving water onto ice shelf
- Perform self rescue using belay system
- Assist a teammate using non-contact rescue options.
Recertification / Recurrency
As an option to recommended recertification every 3 years, another option could be annual refresher or recurency training. The recurency would be one day of practical skills with minimal instruction. Students would perform the core practical skills, then should have enough time left to complete a couple of optional skill modules
